Artist Spotlight: Gi Seok Cho
One cannot put Gi Seok Cho in a box. The Seoul-based creative started out in the Korean fashion landscape as a graphic designer. He then went on to work as set designer, and art director. Now, his focus is portraiture. A medium that clearly reflects the dynamism, intrigue, and diversity of his past lives.
There is an element of surrealism in Cho’s carefully crafted compositions. Each piece has its own distinct character, but upon further inspection we find recurring elements: soft lighting, flowers, the blurring of time, the combination of traditional Korean culture with the avant-garde.
“Digital technology is very advanced, and continues to evolve quickly, but traditional ways of thinking and society remain. The two coexist.”
Cho’s vibrant, high-end style gained the attention of renowned fashion brands including Vogue Korea, Elle Korea, Esquire Korea, Adidas, and Cartier. He has even developed his own luxury clothing and jewelry brand, Kusikohc. However, portraits continue to be his choice method of expression.
